Intimate surgery, labiaplasty
What is female labiaplasty, labia minora reduction?
Labiaplasty is a method performed in order to reduce the size of labia minora, reduce the congenital enlargement of labia minora, remove unfavorable formal difference due to diseases, injuries, for instance following childbirth, and to achieve or restore a desirable condition.
Why is female intimate surgery or labiaplasty required?
Patients ask for intimate surgery because of functional or cosmetic reasons, but in some cases both reasons may play a role simultaneously in their decision.
- There are many complaints about the enlarged labia getting painful during exercises or prolonged sitting.
- Others are embarrassed because they experience discomfort during their sexual intercourse.
- Models, dancers and athletes may be embarrassed to wear too tight costumes that reveal the outline of the genitals, or in some cases the enlarged labia may be revealed from certain lingerie and sport dresses.
- Others are afraid of the negative opinion of their partners that may lead to more or less severe psychic problems, and decrease or loss of self-confidence.
The recent fashion of intimate esthetics (shaving, tattoos, intimate piercing) has drawn attention to this body region. The larger than optimal labia is visualized because of the hairless pubic area.
How is labiaplasty performed?
Local anesthetics are used during labiaplasty, it is an outpatient procedure, the surgical intervention takes about 1.5 hours that is followed by a 2-3 hour monitoring.
A local Lidocain injection (local anesthetic) is applied to the region of the plastic surgery, the excess labial tissue is removed, and then the edges of the wound are closed with fine needle and suture. The inconveniences during the removal of the stitches are eliminated with the use of absorbable sutures. The healing of the wound on the labia takes approximately 2 weeks and the final state is achieved within 2-3 months.
What kind of complications may occur during labiaplasty?
Complications of pain, bleeding or infection may occur just as a result of any surgical intervention in general. The effect of the local anesthetic vanishes within 1.5-2 hours and you should take some painkillers when burning sensation occurs. You should avoid vigorous physical activities, like exercises or sexual intercourse.
Laboratory examination of bleeding and coagulation is performed. If the results are normal the surgical intervention can be performed. In case of any differences the surgical intervention must be delayed and further examinations are required. Homeopathic remedies are recommended for our patients to control slight bleedings.
Labiaplasty is not performed during menstruation to decrease the risk of infections. Postsurgical hygiene is very important; washing should be careful and considerate.
What are my tasks after labiaplasty?
You have to stay in bed for a couple of days, wash of the surgical area with some antiseptics, take painkillers and antibiotics, and in case of bleeding occurs, local cooling is recommended. Sexual intercourses should be avoided for 3-4 weeks naturally.
